food, love and movies

 recently i realized how much i love symbolism of food in media. its interesting to see how basic necessity becomes a metaphor for various things, such as: love, desire or even political like: matriarchy, patriarchy, power or maybe submission. there is of course more to it, but i think i will leave this to your interpretation. this topic leaves me always curious and interested because of how much accurate it is. 

i've noticed that food became a luxury in media. celebrities promoting ozempic thing and etc. and then ads presenting food in non food related products, just for the aesthetics. a basic necessity is becoming a status. content creators creating aesthetically pleasing dishes just to get a few likes, some even making posts, reels of food in almost thirst trapping way. isn't it all weird? but now i feel like i run away from the main topic which is the food + movies! 

back to the first paragraph; i really want to watch more food related films, docs, etc. just to see how people create their view on the topic of food. maybe it's the memories of their grandma cooking something delicious, or maybe their love and appreciation for the making of dishes. there is a polish saying: "przez żołądek do serca." which means "through the stomach to the heart." and i think this sentence is the leading theme of this post. or maybe not? we will see!

here are movies with food related themes:

- 301/302 (1995)

this is a south korean horror, with sapphic elements. it tells a story of two women, being different but having the same 'core' which is food. one woman is a perfect houswife; she cooks, she has a great body and then we have another woman who lives next to her's, who is calling herself a writer. she has eating disorder and she's alone. what will happen if one wants the other one to eat her food? well definitely something dark.

- tampopo (1985) 

ah, japanese classic... a joyful trip filled with love and food, maybe love for food? a pair of truck drivers visit the shop that is selling ramen, sadly the owner - tampopo is not the best at carrying the business, so she begs them to help. the movie is about how food is important in our lives. the art of food and love.

- dumplings (2004)

a fading actress tries aunt mei's dumplings that make the middle aged women stay youthful. the actress does everything to find out the secret ingredient. the movie is not about love, it's rather about obsession of staying young. it's a thiller made by fruit chan, which is (in my opinion) a commentary about the extremes that women take to stay youthful.
